FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

General Questions About Advanced-Glass Fiberglass

  • Advanced-Glass is our proprietary fiberglass resurfacing system designed to provide one of the most durable, long-lasting, and easy-to-maintain pool finishes available today. It uses premium materials, proven application methods, and a uniquely thick finish coat that significantly outlasts traditional plaster or hand-lay fiberglass systems.

  • Most backyard pools enjoy 20–30+ years of service life—often 2–3 times longer than a typical replaster job, which commonly lasts 5–10 years. Commercial pools and spas also benefit from exceptional longevity when properly maintained - much longer than plaster.

  • Many contractors use lighter equipment, thinner coatings, or shortcuts in surface prep. Our process is known for:

    • Thick, durable finish coats

    • Industry-leading surface preparation

    • Consistent application using professional spray equipment

    • Approvals from the Los Angeles County Environmental Health Department

    • Over 35 years of specialized experience

  • Yes. With the Advanced-Glass system, the fiberglass layer is fully encapsulated under a heavy protective finish coat. This prevents any fiber exposure and creates a durable, sanitary, non-porous surface that stays smooth and stable for decades. Our system was approved by the Los Angeles County Health Department after a detailed evaluation confirming that our materials meet the same safety standards used for drinking water.

  • Yes—Advanced-Glass can resurface:

    • Plaster/gunite pools

    • Pools previously fiberglassed

    • Pebble or quartz pools

    • Vinyl-liner conversions

    • Poured-concrete pools

    • Prefab fiberglass pools

Each pool type requires specific preparation, which our team evaluates during inspection.

  • White fiberglass provides the most consistent and attractive water color, along with excellent UV stability, long-term durability, and easier stain monitoring. Because pool resurfacing is done outdoors rather than in a controlled factory environment, factors like weather and humidity can cause colored finishes to cure unevenly or show streaks and variations. Our high-quality white finish avoids these issues and produces beautifully blue water every time.

Durability, Value & Performance

  • Fiberglass is non-porous, smooth, and chemically stable. Unlike plaster, it does not absorb water, dissolve over time, or require aggressive brushing or chemical balancing during startup. It also resists cracking far better than cement-based surfaces.

  • Fiberglass is one of the most effective ways to address structural cracks in plaster pools. We have saved thousands of cracked pools! While no contractor can guarantee that ground movement won’t re-crack the shell, fiberglass provides excellent crack resistance and is often the best long-term solution for troubled pools. And if it ever does crack, fiberglass can be repaired!

  • Our spray equipment allows us to apply a significantly thicker finish coat, especially on the floor where durability matters most. Many competitors cannot achieve this because their equipment or methods are limited to thin, rolled-on coats.

YES! We mix our own proprietary finish coat which allows us to lead the industry in long-term performance.

  • A few reasons:

    • Our installations last 2–3× longer than plaster

    • We use premium materials and advanced spray equipment

    • We never cut corners on surface prep

    • We stand behind our warranty and remain available years later

Most customers find Advanced-Glass to be the best long-term value—not the cheapest short-term fix.

  • Often, yes. Many leaks in plaster or older pools come from cracks, failing plaster, hollow spots, old deteriorated fiberglass. The Advanced-Glass system creates a strong, watertight barrier that can help address many common leak sources. While no contractor can guarantee against future leaks caused by soil movement or structural shifting, fiberglass is widely considered one of the most effective long-term solutions for leaking pools. Leaks can also be due to pipes, plumbing, or equipment - so if you suspect your pool is leaking we always recommend a pressure test and leak detection be performed by a qualified leak detection professional before resurfacing.

  • Leaks can show up as unexplained water loss, air in the system, wet soil spots around the pool, or difficulty maintaining water chemistry. Before resurfacing, we visually inspect the shell, skimmers, fittings, tile line, and any visible cracks. If you have a leak detection report, please make sure to share it with us so that we can review it to ensure the resurfacing addresses all known issues within our scope. Plumbing leaks may need to be repaired by a leak detection professional or pool plumber - and should be done before resurfacing.

Maintenance & Water Care

  • Yes—significantly. Fiberglass is:

    • Non-porous, so algae cannot embed into the surface

    • Chemically stable, requiring fewer chemicals

    • Smooth, preventing scale and mineral buildup

    • Easier on cleaning tools and equipment

Most owners notice lower maintenance costs and much clearer water.

  • Unlike plaster, which requires 3-4 weeks of brushing and strict chemical control, Advanced-Glass needs no brushing at all during startup. After filling, customers simply balance water and enjoy the pool.

  • Absolutely—fiberglass is ideal for salt systems because it resists chemical erosion, unlike plaster which can etch and discolor more quickly in saltwater.

  • Fiberglass is highly resistant to staining because it’s non-porous, but occasional surface stains can still occur from metals, leaves, fertilizer, or imbalanced water chemistry. The good news is that almost all stains on an Advanced-Glass finish can be safely removed without damaging the surface.

  • Nearly all stains can be removed chemically using proper stain-treatment techniques. Because the surface is smooth and non-porous, stains sit on top rather than penetrating into the finish — which makes removal faster and more effective than with plaster or pebble surfaces.

Warranty & Long-Term Support

  • Our standard warranty covers delamination of the fiberglass from the plaster substrate - the most significant failure risk in fiberglass resurfacing. Unlike other companies, we handle warranty calls promptly and without hassle.

  • Long warranties are often a marketing tactic—many competitors go out of business or make warranty service nearly impossible. We offer terms that reflect our integrity and our track record of staying in business for decades. Our quality work is backed up by our solid warranty.

  • Cracks caused by ground movement can be repaired. Typical repairs are straightforward and cost-effective, especially compared to re-plastering and expensive (and frequently ineffective) staples.

Process & Timing

  • A typical residential pool takes 3–5 days or so, depending on weather, substrate conditions, and whether tile is being replaced. Commercial pools may take longer due to pool size, inspections and required safety upgrades. But Remember - startup is quick and easy. Once we are done, simply balance and swim! No brushing or long/extended curing time required.

  • During certain stages of the project, the resin can produce a temporary odor. It fades quickly once the material cures, typically within a few hours. If you are sensitive to smells, you may prefer to be away during those times. For close neighbors, it’s helpful to give them a heads-up so they aren’t surprised by the temporary odor.

  • Yes—our team can drain the pool for you if needed.

  • Yes—when we resurface pools we frequently upgrade older pools to modern safety standards, including split drains, and new compliant VGD suction outlet covers.

Comparing Pool Surfaces

  • Fiberglass benefits:

    • Lasts 2–3× longer

    • No startup brushing

    • Non-porous (resists stains, algae, discoloration)

    • Smooth on feet, yet durable

    • Lower chemical usage

Plaster is prone to etching, staining, and requires strict startup care.

  • Pebble is durable but rough on the feet and still porous. Fiberglass is smoother, more resistant to mineral buildup, and has a significantly easier startup.

  • No—hand-lay typically uses less material, thinner finish coats, and has a shorter lifespan. Our sprayed system produces a thicker, more uniform finish that lasts far longer.

Before, During & After the Project

  • We’ll guide you through selecting your options (such as tile selections) and confirm access, parking and anything else needed. Most homeowners only need to be sure to turn off the pool equipment (pumps, lights, etc), clear the pool area and ensure we have access to power and water.

  • Simply fill the pool, balance chemicals, and enjoy. No brushing, no special curing schedules, and no multi-week maintenance routines like plaster requires.

  • Our customers describe working with us as easy, professional, and stress-free. From the first call to the final walkthrough, we focus on clear communication, reliable scheduling, and delivering results that exceed expectations. Most clients tell us the experience was smoother and more organized than they anticipated.
